What Is Phishing
Phishing refers to identity theft attempts online via websites that look like real legitimate ones. These are done usually through e-mail spoofing or instant chat messages.
An email or chat message is received by an unsuspecting user. Such email/message may look like the real thing because it spoofs popular sites, such as Facebook, Ebay, PayPal, and other social networking, auction and online payment websites. Clicking on the link included in these malicious emails/messages leads users to fake websites with the same look/feel as their real counterparts.
The user’s username, password, and other information are stolen once the/she “takes a bite” at these malicious emails/messages.
Phishing is a serious issue. Businesses in the United States lose about $2 billion each year when their clients become victims. An estimated $9 billion is lost globally to phishing. At least one of twenty users falls prey to phishing schemes, and loses money or access to their email or website account.
While there are legislation, security standards and online information campaigns that attempt to curb this issue, the best strategy is still proactive action.
